Project leader: Eucalypt hybrid developments
BSc Agric - University of Natal

Mthandeni Joel Cele has been a research scientist at the Institute for Commercial Forestry Research since 2011. He is the project leader for the Eucalypt Hybrid consortium which focuses on the development of tested eucalypt hybrid clones. Forming part of this project are the vegetative propagation studies as well as the well characterised biotic and abiotic risk profiles of the clones. This project focuses on Eucalyptus grandis, E. nitens, E. dunnii, E. urophylla, Corymbia henryii, C. torelliana, E. macarthurii and E. benthamii.

He is also involved in the establishment of advanced generation breeding cycles of E. badjensis and C. henryii. This involves the assessment of wood properties, genetic diversity, development of NIR model as well as the improvement in seed supply capacity.
